A new “Joseph” for a new generation
The latest production by Pieter Toerien Productions and LAMTA – Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre & Studio at Montecasino was an absolute treat, being a refreshing, exciting modern take on an enduring classic.
Not only did co-directors Anton Luitingh and Duane Alexander pay tribute to the show’s rock n roll roots (it is a quintessentially 70s show), but they amped up the energy even further, with utterly irresistible dance numbers.
The dancing will captivate a 2025 audience as much as the original did in 1972 in Edinburgh.
Standout of the evening
In among the campy OTT bling of Christopher Jaftha ‘s Elvis homage “Stone the Crows” and “King of My Heart” and the hippie-esque brothers’ “Those Canaan
Days” the standout of the evening has to be “Close Every Door”.
Dylan Janse van Rensburg gave a quite outstandingly poignant rendition which left the audience visibly moved.
There were moments which were pricelessly funny – I saw Craig Urbani and his daughter doubled over in the row ahead – but no spoilers!
Narrator Lelo Ramasimong deserves a special mention for her powerful vocals and amazing charisma.
Go-go-go-go!
Don’t just go to this amazing technicolor production, but go-go-go-GO! These songs will run around in your head all day
If I could have watched the matinee and evening shows back-to-back I would have. Kudos to the youthful cast that they gave such high energy performances at both 2pm and 6pm. A lovely cast who gave it their all!
